Omar Sosa to Workshop Symphony Composition

Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa returns to the San Francisco Bay
Area in February. The main focus of his visit will be an “open
rehearsal” presentation of his first work for orchestra entitled “From
Our Mother”, made possible by a grant from Yerba Buena Center for the
Arts in San Francisco. The new piece will be performed by the Oakland
Youth Orchestra, conducted by Oakland East Bay Symphony music director
Michael Morgan. Accompanying the 40-piece orchestra will be Omar on
piano, John Santos on bata, Sheldon Brown on saxophone, and Elliot Kavee
on drums. Omar’s symphony piece incorporates musical elements from
Afro-Cuban and Afro-Ecuadorian folkloric traditions.

This very special event will begin at 8 PM on Saturday, February 17 in
the Forum at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, corner of
Mission and Third Streets. Tickets ($15/$12) are available by calling

Following the orchestra presentation, Omar will perform with his own
ensemble, including Elliot Kavee on drums, Geoff Brennan on bass,
Sheldon Brown on saxophones, John Santos on percussion, John Calloway on
flute, and introducing Moroccan singer and multi-instrumentalist Yassir
Chadly. Omar’s concert will feature material from his
soon-to-be-released large-ensemble recording “Prietos”.
